　　日本人はあいさつをよくすると言われる。確かに朝起きてから夜寝るまで、

日常生活のさまざまな場面で決まって用いられる定型的なあいさつ言葉も豊富

である。だだ、あいさつを交わすのは、何らかの意味で仲間うちと見なした相手にだけであって、例えば公園を散歩していて会った見知らぬ人、乗物で同席

しただけの人などにはよほどのことがないかぎり言葉をかけることはまれである。彼らがその場では部外者・ヨソ者だからである。日本人が閉鎖的と評されるひとつの原因だろう。

A Friendly Word: Greetings

 The Japanese are also fond of salutations and other civilities. From

morning to night, the day is filled with a rich variety of pleasantries

used for specific situations. However, as a general rule, these words

are only spoken to friends and acquaintances, and most Japanese are

not given to speaking to strangers in the park or on the train. Instead,

such people are regarded as unknowns outside the ken of their concern,

and this tendency to restrict sociability to people they already know is

one reason why Japanese have acquired a reputation for being anti-social.
