I've drawn up this text, maybe you can find some errors.....would you? Thank you in advance.
Cutting
expenses is getting a normal practice across the world due to the international
crisis. Most countries are facing bad economic times since the lack of control
over the banking sector triggered the granting of numerous high risk credits
which never should have been given.
In Spain, our
President Zapatero enacted a law which allowed the State to cut the civil
servant’s wages by 5-15% in order to reduce the huge budget deficit by 4.5 billion euros. I think Zapatero lost a very
good opportunity to regulate the wage of all the politicians in the country
(regions and councils), because it is not logical that mayors like the one in
Torrelodones (a village near Madrid) has a higher wage than the president of
the government. More than 10 other mayors have a similar salary. It is imperative
to state and classify all the wages of mayors and town councillor according to
the population in each city, town or village in order to avoid overspending and
tackling debt.
At the upper
and lower houses something even more embarrassing happens, and it is that
senators and MP’s have a very good wage (6.000 euros per month plus generous
travel expenses). They are allowed to have other employments, for instance some
of them work on debates at radio stations or they own small companies such as
lawyer’s offices or agencies. This is when I understood the reason why most of
the Mp’s and senators are always absence when laws are being voted every
Thursday. I think that 6.000 euros are “enough” for a full-time commitment with
their public position.
Curiously
enough, it happens that when these people are no longer elected by the voters,
they end up as member of executive councils in the biggest companies. It means
that the experience achieved gives them a very good chance to get a good
position in the private sector, for instance, Felipe González in Gas Natural.
