User time zones and time stamps on posts here on screen

Language - (hold down the CTRL key to select more than one):

I wondered how to interpret the timestamp which is shown with the posts, because I was curious about the local time a user had written a post. Todd, our webmaster, explains to me:

"It's by server time in the U.S. eastern time zone, and written in U.S. format (mm/dd/yy)"
Which should currently be EDT= GMT/UTC -4
On my screen I see the format displayed as (DDD, mm/dd/yy - hh:mm), which is just fine.

Learning to speak by reading?

Language - (hold down the CTRL key to select more than one):

Learning a language actually consists of 4 skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking. They are of course closely related, but depending on what you want to do with the language you are learning, you will not need to become perfect in all 4.

Here I am on about speaking more fluently. My method is learning to speak by reading aloud. This advice works for me since years and is my way of keeping several languages alive.

Habits of passengers riding subway/underground trains

Language - (hold down the CTRL key to select more than one):

Hi everyone!
I just read a newspaper article about a study conducted in USA about how and why people choose their places in the subway trains. This is interesting reading, but I should like to ask MIXXER members from other countries who regularly use public transport at home (Berlin, Paris, Madrid, London, Tokyo, ...). Would they agree or tell a different story?
Here is the link to the article:

"fancy" national letters not on your "normal" keyboard?

Language - (hold down the CTRL key to select more than one):

How to type foreign characters which are not on your national keyboard

Many languages based on the latin alphabet use additional characters to represent additional sounds specific to that language, as well as a few additional punctuation symbols. They are absolutely required in a properly written text, although people will be able to understand your text if you make mistakes.
Here is the most universal method to type these characters. It works here in MIXXER.

Do write a blog, only placing a profile is not enough!

Welcome newcomers to MIXXER!
I am a member here since almost one year now and I'd like to share an experience I made.

When looking for language partners, doing a profile search and checking members' profiles is just like opening websites after a google search. Imagine: when a showcase of a shop is almost empty, why should anyone enter the shop and talk to the owner?

How I use "Bookmarks" in Mixxer

Language - (hold down the CTRL key to select more than one):

Hi everyone!

I like the feature "Bookmarks" and find it very helpful. It works very much like the list of "Favorites" in a browser. Access is via the second tab from left when you call your own profile page.

Whenever I read a blog which is interesting for me, I open it up (click on the title  of the blog) and then, even if I do not write a comment immediately, I will click on "Bookmark this" (below the bottom line of the text on the right). This way, I can return to that subject any time and directly.
