Every year this time, it's a great interest in my country Japan whether our nationals win a Nobel Prize. Or others had expected over the past few days if some prominent persons would be chosen.

Shinya Yamanaka, a Kyoto University professor, won this year's Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine. He shared the prize with John Gurdon of the Gurdon Institute, Cambridge, Britain.

Mr. Yamanaka is the first person who invented so-called iPS stem cells in 2006.  "i" in the word iPS is for "induced," or artificially produced, P intends pluripotent, consisting of "plural" and "potent." Those stem cells have potentials which, like a fertile egg, would turn into any cells in the body. The metaphor is the reference from a page of the office of Prime Minister.   (http://www.kantei.go.jp/jp/headline/nobelprize2012.html)

In addition, it is the first Japanese winner of the prize for 25 years since 1987. It was won by Susumu Tonegawa at the time.

I picked this topic because the newspaper I subscribe, Shukan ST, chose Mr. Yamanaka on its cover page as this week's prominent person.
