One day, I was walking through the street of a small village in Guatemala doing community service(3 hr away from Guatemala City ) and suddenly a little girl touch me from my back and with a huge smile, she gave to me a hand woven bracelet. Then with a kind gesture, she hugged me and said' Thank You for visiting my family This simple and short moment will last forever in my mind. I volunteered for six months at a nonprofit organization in Guatemala. Constru Casa aims to improve the quality of life among Guatemalans living in extreme poverty through the provision of basic housing, support programs, and community development projects related to health and education. One of my duties was to conduct a social research on the long-term impact of the organization identifying positive outcomes for families living in extreme poverty lacking of a safe and durable home. My Involvement with beneficiaries families and their communities was reaching them in their new houses, talking to them and listening to how their lives changed since the organization's intervention. Conducting interviews and filling out questionnaires with families, their children and with social workers of Constru Casa's partner organizations was some of my responsibilities established in my job description, however, it was more than that. Every time that I passed through the door of every family that received me in their home, I listened to their life anecdote. many times I laugh, I played with kids, even I cried with some of their painful stories.
