The living standard in Tanzania is very wide ranging from a frugal life in villages of Maasai people to a life in mansion like billionaires in advanced countries. According to a health statistics by WHO, Tanzanian gross national income per head is $1,500 in 2011. First of all I checked the bigger parameter, the standard living of its people with this in mind. While cruising the suburbs by car, quite a few simple apartment houses with concrete walls attracted our attention. Our destination, Harima-Seremani-Mugal`s family was also situated out of the alley densed with such houses and his was of course an apartment. “ This is common, isn`t it? It`s so with all the friends of mine.” Harima lives with nine family members at an apartment with two rooms of about six mats. An apartment with three households back to back which were built same. The other two households are his relatives. “ We gather together on celebratory occasions or a tidbit of something.” They closely get together and dine and sleep at the same place. Because we visited them at mealtimes, they entertained us with homemade dishes. It is said that hosting the meal is a proof of the best welcome in Tanzania. They serve the meal with smile even to unexpected visitors. It is a culture as a matter of course. So they are in the habit of preparing the meal extra in order to cope with sudden visitors. Pitchers and bowls were brought before the meal. There was also soap, with which we wash hands and start to eat. No table was available because of space. We ate from the bowls on the floor.
