You have been asked to write a report for an international research company about the nature and quality of advertising in your country.

You should

  • describe some of the positive and negative aspects of two different forms of advertising in your country

  • say how effective these advertising methods are

  • suggest one or two changes which could be introduced to counter the negative aspects

ADVERTISING IN SPAIN

The purpose of this report is to analise the main features of two of the most common forms of advertising in Spain nowadays. It goes without saying that advertising companies are not going through the best of their times in this dark economic times in which people are becoming more and more reluctant to buy the products offered in their advertisements.

TV ads

This is one of the methods most frequently used by the companies to advertise their products. As an advantage, it has the capacity of reaching the vast majority of their potential customers, provided they broadcast them in the right time of the day, which is normally the evening, when people at their homes gather around the TV to see their favourite programmes.

However, there is a considerable downside, as sometimes people find the advertisements on TV rather annoying, especially if you take into account that they are watching a programmed in which they are interested and it is suddenly interrupted by a series of ads. It makes some people go mad, and therefore it might cause a negative prejudice towards that particular product among the viewers.

Despite what I have just pointed out, this is still one of the most effective forms of advertising. In fact, all of us have a 'favourite advertisement', from which we love the soundtrack, or the fact that our favourite actor/actress takes part, or it simply happens to turn out funny to us.

Phone calls

Companies seem to have gone for this form of advertisement more and more over the last few years. It goes without saying that it gives the great advantage of talking directly with their potential clients, therefore the likelihood of selling a certain product 'on the spot' grows exponentially.

As a downside, people cannot help getting the feeling of being pushed to buy something, and that is something they really dislike. What is more, some people will even hang up without going any further as soon as they find out what the call is about.

Possible improvements

As TV ads are concerned, an improvement of the contents is the key to succeed. So a good choice of the performing staff, the soundtrack and the plot itself must be in order.

Regarding the second method, that is, the phoce calls, I would go for a thorough study of the customers' habits instead of picking them at random. To give an example, I find it pointless to try to sell a smartphone to an elderly person who is not interested in anything of the kind.

There are many more forms of advertisement, although my objective in this report was to give a quick overview of two of the most common, as well as their main pros and cons.
