I am a Singaporean Chinese. The education system in my country mostly uses English. During my primary and secondary school education, almost all the subjects such as Mathematics, Science and Social Studies use English as a language of instruction. Chinese is also used in Chinese lesson. Now that I am going to be a university student, the chance to learn Chinese has decreased.
Although I have mentioned (in the title) that my Chinese isn't good, but I preferred to use Chinese in conversation, unless the people I am speaking to can't understand Chinese. If it's writing, my Chinese can't make it.
Both of my parents speak Chinese, and yet they don't know much about English. I learned Chinese from my parents, and English from school. I can understand common Chinese words, but when it comes to Chinese used in business settings, I cannot make it. When I speak in Chinese, sometimes I would come across words that I don't know how to say in Chinese, so I would use English to replace it. So a sentence will have a mixture of Chinese and English in it. My other (Singapore) Chinese friends also speak this way.
I hate Chinese idioms (cheng yu). I can only use simple idioms. During my time in my secondary school, I use little or no idioms in my essay writing at all.
But I hope I could brush up my Chinese. Currently there are a lot of Chinese from Mainland China coming to Singapore to work, so I would like to improve my Chinese.
