Covid has obliged the society to take advantage of technology and internet and to suddenly stop working on site but to do it remotely. Some people believe that online working will never replace on site working. However, there are several arguments in favour of the former.
One important aspect of remote working is that increasing the share of people that work from home would in fact represent a significant reduction of the traffic in the whole city. This implies a decrease in the fuel consumption and in the travel time for the rest of people that cannot work online, or that need to take the childs to school or to perform any activity in person. In this way, we would be helping the environment and lowering the average time that any trip requires.
On second place, some employees -including me- will definitely be much happier. First of all, because they wouldn't have to travel long distances from home to work everyday, thus avoiding the usual traffic issues, parking costs or the spare time waiting for the bus. Moreover, the working environment is frequently much more quiet at home rather than at the office, where you can repeatedely listen to a collegue complaining about some problem, a meeting near your desk or a strike surrounding the building.
To sum up, I consider that the reduction on the traffic is the most important advantage of working from home, because it is not only a single employee that benefits from it but the whole society and the environment too.
