そろばんは計算に使う道具で、中国から伝わりました。５個ないし７個の玉をさした棒が何本も長方形の枠の中にはめ込んであり、その玉を動かして計算します。現在は電卓に押され気味ですが、そろばんを学習すると暗算に強くなることから、そろばん塾も多数存在しています。また、そろばんの検定試験もあります。

Abacus is a tool to calculate and it came down from China. It has some rods with 5 or 7 beads and they are fitted into rectangle frame, and Japanese calculate by flipping the beads. However, Japanese recently use electronic desktop calculator since it's useful. On the other hand, many Japanese learn how to use an abacus because we can get a merit to improve count ability, therefore there are many schools for abacus. Furthermore, there is a certificate examination in Japan.
