My presentation topic was about the giant african snail, Achatina fulica. It’s an invasive species which has been introduced in many countries and for a lot of reasons. For food for instance but also for faming, as a pet, for decoration, ornementation...etc. Nowadays it’s regarded like an invasive species because it has impacts on economy, ecology, biology and environment of many countries. In spite of many attempts to fight this snail, through diverse ways : biological control, introduction of a predatory species , physical and chemical control (molluscicides), the scientists decided to more sensibilize the population. They also create protocols for treatements to eliminate infestation of snails. In addition, inspections of incoming carriers and cargoships at international points of entry must be undertaken. Finally, they currently talk about using an aqueous extract of diseased Achatina fulica sprayed onto the snails and their food plants but it’s not an accomplished project yet !
