ホオズキはナス科の多年生植物で、夏にはオレンジ色をした風船のような袋の中に、丸いさくらんぼのような実が熟します。日本の女の子たちは、その実をよくもみ、小さく開けた穴から柔らかくした果肉を出し、舌と歯に当てて笛にして、よく遊んだものです。毎年７月には、東京の浅草でほおずき市が開かれ、多くの人々が集まります。
