The ignorance of the author of this article is immense. He writes: "Francis has scriptural authority on his side. When Onan refused to impregnate his dead brother’s wife and “spilled his seed on the ground”, the Lord made him pay the ultimate price for pleasuring himself and slew him." This phrase suffices to demonstrate that the author of this article has no idea of what he is talking about. Onan marry that woman exclusively because under the Law of Moses she needed a son in order to inherit the properties of her dead husband. Onan, her brother-in-law, was supposed to marry her and give her a son that would be the heir to Onan's dead brother. However, Onan refused to impregnate her and just used her as a sex toy. Anyone with the a little bit of knowledge of Mosaic Law and Scripture in general knows this. Hence, the punishment imposed to Onan has nothing to do with uncontrolled procreation, just as the author of this article has no idea of what he is writing about. Here you have the proof of what I'm saying: "And Judah said unto Onan: 'Go in unto thy brother's wife, and perform the duty of a husband's brother unto her, and raise up seed to thy brother.' And Onan knew that the seed would not be his; and it came to pass when he went in unto his brother's wife, that he spilled it on the ground, lest he should give seed to his brother." (Genesis 38:8-9)
