Are Nowadays College Students Not as Competent  as Before

                  Due to the policy of college enrollment expanding since 1999, more and more people in China can get chance to receive higher education. But the increasing number of college graduates has also caused a tension at job market for college students. The difficulty for college graduates to find jobs has become a social issue in China. Some people blame this on incompetence of college students and think that nowadays graduates are no match on those decades years ago.  However, I have different opinions.

                  First of all, I do believe the policy to expand college enrollment will definitely benefit a lot of students and promote the development of society. As we know, the more people receive education, the better society will be. It’s a great step towards educational equality.

                  Secondly, the judgement  that nowadays college students are not as competent as before is unfair. In fact with the reform of education system and improvement of teaching method, more and more college graduates are good enough to seek further education abroad, start their own business and obtain patents and so on.  

                  Thirdly, the difficulty for college students to find jobs is due to many reasons including Chinese large population, regional unbalanced development, disadvantages of current educational system and  improper job choices of some graduates, etc. We should face the problem rather than conceal it. And we should comprehensively consider the problem rather than focus on one single aspect--the incompetence of nowadays college students.

                   Last, Chinese educational system does have defects, especially compared with that of developed countries. It’s necessary to give equal weight to both the quantity and quality of college students. We should deepen the reform of education system, advocate the spirit of innovation and promote the combination of theory and practice on campus in order to cultivate versatile talents instead of bookworms.

                   In conclusion, I don’t agree that contemporary university students are inferior to those in the past. We will make efforts to find a resolution to ease the tightness of job market for college graduates. Besides, I have faith in that the future of Chinese students will be brighter.
