Final Test: The end justifies the means

Throughout history, now and over time there is a conflict between groups of people. The way some people rationalizes the outcome of these struggles and disagreements differs. Is it worth all the work, efforts, lives are sacrificed for a goal? Many years ago, during colonialism in Latin America, people are asked this question. People today seem to believe that they would not make the same mistakes. However, " Even the Rain "almost the same situation occurs that happened five hundred years ago. The main idea remains in relation to colonialism and the class system is that the end justifies the means.

One of these conflicts include the privatization of water in Bolivia. This problem occurs a few years ago in " llu also via ". The riots with water privatization was a significant impact on people in Bolivia. Herraiz Iñigo, who is a journalist of Radio Corporation and Spanish Television, wrote in an article for America Economic and notes that, "The payment of the water bill had passed assume almost half the monthly budget of the poorest families . "These tensions led to a fight between the company and people. These families can not afford this need. So the problems and violence arose fifteen years.

Another article, online newspaper El Pais reported people experience violence in Bolivia. The injusticios of privatization began in 2000. For fifteen years the people of the fourth largest city in Bolivia have fought for human rights. "The hundreds of thousands of Bolivians took to the streets those days," and they "have threatened not only the will of the government, but the entire privatization model that was imposed in Latin America" (Bertelli, Sauras, Lill) . The importance of this event is that the problem has affected all parts of Latin America. The fight for fairness among the government and citizens still continues to this day.

However, the mistreatment of the Indians back to the beginning (specifically when Cristoforo Columbus "discovered" the New World in 1492). During this time there are many crimes against the Indians who many consider genocide. Columbus wrote in his diary that, "'They would be excellent servants ... with 50 men we can subjugate and force them to do as we please" (Rye). From the beginning, the purpose of the Europeans was to take advantage of the natives. Columbus and other conquerors took his treasure of gold and silver and enslaved thousands of people (Rye). Estes horrible acts caused the deprivation of rights for the next 500 years.

" Even the Rain " shows this crisis with a powerful view of the struggle between the natives and European settlers in juxtaposition with the struggle between indigenous actors and crew of European cinema. As the producer and director Costa Sebastian shoots his film, they lost the understanding of justice and injustice. However, the film (which is within the film "Even the Rain" ) is a repetition of history. For most of the film, Costa and Sebastian believe that the end justifies the means (such as the events that happened to Christopher Columbus) and they allow human abuses occur. Although the producer, director and actors want the film to expose the reality of colonialism, the rationality of the end justifies the means is not enough. This idea can not allow the actions that transpire during the shooting although a noble purpose for the outcome.

The water crisis is an ongoing problem but the film crew ignored because Sebastian says "the film comes first, always." The characters (such as the lead actor Daniel / rebel chief) compared to the situation of Indigenous. He shows (at the cost and Sebastian) that the film does not always come first. The film is not all. The lives of people (actors / indigenous) worth more.

The similarity of all situations is compared and juxtaposed the idea of the end justifies the means. Columbus thought that Europeans would make a better world and become the natives to Christianity

"In a few weeks, the violence escalated uncontrollably" and the city was like "a battlefield" (Bertelli, Sauras, Lill)

In the film " Even the Rain "this conflict occurs during a film session for a new movie.

The highest priority for them and Christopher Columbus is the advancement of his goal, whatever it takes. The Europeans conquered all of the new world, no matter the cost. The atrocities, oppression and crimes against indigenous people is a shame. In " Rain "actions of the conquerors it is shown in the display. The power of cinema is very real and so the director and producer want to make a film about colonialism in Latin America. But their hopes for the historical understanding is lost when they choose the film before that indigenous actors.

"Sebastian, there are more things you importanetes film," Daniel says. These words can be applied to the situation of Christopher Columbus as well. Spain wanted to take the sovereignty of indigenous peoples and their land and so ignored their rights. Although in situations took advantage of indigenous, they justified their actions with the idea that the end justifies the means.

They believe that their ultimate goal worth more than the suffering in the process. "This enfretamiento will pass and be forgotten, our film does not. Our film will last forever, "says Sebastian. The reality of the immortality of the film is a false justification. Sebastian and Costa think that his film can help indigenous but actually pay them little money and very demanding.

"Even the Rain "shows the juxtaposition of the two situations different times with the same ideas. The actor, who plays Fray Antonio Montesinos, presents his sermon with intensity and passion when he says, "I am Christ's voice crying in the wilderness. That voice that all are in mortal sin and in it you live and die for the cruelty and tyranny that you use with this people says. "This speech Sebastian helps you realize the impact of their actions. The moment is very powerful and tense because the reality of the situation and the film shines through and maybe the end justifies the means.

But, at the end of the movie men (Costa and Sebastian) they have realized the struggle of the poor indigenous and that the end always justifies the means. It is important that the audience understands the difference between the outcome of " Even the Rain " and the outcome of the European conquest. When Costa and Sebastian formed a relationship with Daniel (the main actor) and his family, they discover that there are more important things in the world that their personal goals.

The humanization of the two also changed their views. The climax occurs when Costa chooses to save the girl Daniel, rather than complete the film. Costa life for the life of another (and indigenous) risks. They learn to appreciate the lives of people who appear to have less value. In this way, the story in the film differs from the European conquest story. The director of " Even the Rain "shows the evolution of society. Mankind can make the same mistakes but also people can change in a positive way and learn to value the lives of all people.

The impact of colonialism and class system is profound. " The Rain "is an example showing the atrocities against the indigenous peoples in Latin America. The idea that the end justifies the means is important in the history of colonialism and conquest. Cristoforo Columbus and other European rationaliza their ations with this idea and why there was cruelty and injustice.
