Hi everyone,
I'm doing my First Certificate English exam in two days and I'd appreciate if someone can have a look at my writings . Thanks in advance!! Also if you have any advice I'll love to hear them!
TASK:
'In your English class you have been talking about old people in society. Now your English teacher has asked you to write an essay.
Around the world, people are living and staying healthy for longer and longer. What changes does this bring to today’s society? Are these changes good or bad?
Notes
Write about:
1. Caring for the elderly
2. Jobs
3. __________ (your own idea)'
(Difficulty level: b2-upper intermediate)
ANSWER:
Life expectancy has gone up in a short period of time, due to technological advances, so, nowadays, population rate is huge. It brings many changes, both positive and negative, to the way we live.
Firstly, most of the elderly need assistance sooner or later. But they can find lots of amenities such as electric wheelchairs, lifts or even hills everywhere. In any case, as a last chance, old people’s houses have been built for them.
It means nothing but more employment: old people’s houses need nurses, carers, cleaners…as well as there are people needed to build adapted machines, or even to sell them.
However, there aren’t only advantages; the more population, the less natural resources. If we carry on exploiting our planet, in 100 years we will be having an irreparable shortage of our main sources to keep us alive.
To conclude, in my opinion elderly people are broadly positive, as they are a reason for more jobs and besides, they are our family, they have as much right as the younger to live.
