According to some researchers, children should start to learn a foreign language at a very early age. Thus the child internalizes it naturally. So we, as future English teachers, ought to work using English language in order to they start to familiarize with the language. We know that it is important to respect the learning pace of every child, no matter how slow  with the aim of none of them feel frustrated or lose interest for not understanding anything of the teacher says. Besides, they have to learn step by step and teachers raise the level gradually.

As we know learning a language is learned by practicing it. Both teachers and students must use the foreign language to communicate. I mean that teachers not only have to be the unique spokesperson in the classroom but also students have to participate actively. Therefore, the English class should be a place where oral communication becomes the main means. Personally, I think that most of the time in class we have to use the English language, but there are times that may be complicated for children in which we can use the native language in order to explain some grammar rules, expressions and so on.

Obviously to be a good teacher you have to have many more qualities besides controlling the subject, but in the teaching of idioms knowing pronunciation is the first key and in Spain is the one that most often fails. Not giving enough importance to this aspect is one basis of the disaster of English teaching in our country. As an anecdote, when I was at school, I had been pronunciation a simple word “pencil” in a bad way for a long time, because none of my English teachers ever corrected me that mistake. It is important correct mistakes when children make. Unfortunately, many teachers are conscious that they do not have the level required to teach that language. Nevertheless, they do not do anything to improve it.

To sum up, I strongly believe that teachers must speak English most of the time in class, except in some situations that I have mentioned before.
