What methods could local authorities use to limit the use of cars?

Nowadays, cars have become the main form of transportation as they are the fastest and more comfortable way for people to travel from one place to another. Nevertheless, this comes with many harmful backdraws such as pollution and traffic jams.

One way of approaching the problem is to improve and increase the use of public transport. It is undeniable that this is the most effective way to go anywhere around the center of cities. Nevertheless, unless the government invests more in extending the service hours and adding service to new areas, people will keep using cars when it's more convenient than the public transport.

On the other hand, local authorities could also reduce the use of car by charging drivers who use their car on certain days or times. Therefore, they will have to think it twice before getting on their cars. However, some people, especially those who live in the center of the city, will have no problem in paying the fees.

As a conclusion, I think improving the public transport will encourage people to use it more and limit the use of their car. In combination with this, the government could charge people who drive into the city, and invest this money in buses and trams.
