I’ve read an article about the future of ships. Norwegian designers are planning cargo vessels with minimal or even no crew. This automation could cut the transport costs in a high percentage. Would be more fuel efficient eliminating the need to carry equipment to support people onboard. They have been testing with a ferry used in the Baltic sea that has been equipped with sensors and thermal cameras.
They think they could be available by 2030 or 2035, but until then there are another challenges. There is an International Maritime Organization who bans unmanned ships. Safety rules emerged in 1914 – two years later the sinking of the Titanic.
On the other hand, these ships would be a great opportunities for piracy.
