In Portuguese, hello is "olá". It's not very common to hear people saying "olá" in Brazil though. "Olá" is used more often in written language, like letters and emails.
Now, if you're talking on the telephone hello becomes "Alô". Thus, "Alô" is the word we use to start a phone conversation and to acknowledge that the other person can hear us.
