It is supposed that we do not create our own emotions, whatever they are. We can say whether somebody feels sad, is because something happened to him and he didn’t decide to be in that way. But, as a neurologist said on a talk related to emotions, we created, in a certain way our feelings, based on our experience in the past. We use to relate a situation with the past, and if the past seems good, our emotions with the current experience will be pleasant as well. So that, we can manage our state of mind.
The doctor who gave this speech talked about two examples. First, emotions are no more than gases produced inside of our brain, which was hard to hear for some people because we believe in love, empathy or hate as feelings, what makes us humans, and something even spiritual. Sadly, the truth is that love and all that kind of things are just chemical reactions in our body. So, we can manipulate the production of these chemical compounds if we create good experiences. Second, whatever we see daily, we know what it is due to our empirical knowledge. We know all the things that interact with us because we have seen them before. The same with emotions. If we feel sad or happy is because we have an experience alike to one in the past.
Although there are many discoveries related to manipulation of emotions, doesn’t mean that we are prepared to cure anxiety, depression or any mental disorder without consulting or going with the psychiatric. Developing these sort of skills is complicated and requires a lot of training and responsibility, and perhaps, in the future, there will be about how to manipulate our mind, specifically, our own emotions.
