日本列島は海に囲まれているため海産物が豊富に採れ、特に魚類は日本人の食生活に欠かせません。新鮮な魚が入手できるため生のまま食べる料理―刺身やすしなどは人気のある料理です。そのほかに焼いたり煮たりする調理法が盛んで、西洋料理のように蒸したり揚げたりする料理は多くありません。また、魚は文化とも深く関係しています。鯛は1匹をまるごと焼くと縁起が良いとされ、結婚式などでは必ず出されますし、海老は尾が曲がっているため腰が曲がるほど長生きすることにたとえられて、やはり縁起が良いとされています。

Japan can get many marine products since it's around the sea, especially fish is essential on Jpanese culture. Sashimi and sushi, which is raw fish, are very popular because it's easy to be able to get fresh fish. Moreover, Japanese eat fish which is burned and boiled ,but they rarely eat it which is steamed and deep-fried like western food. Furthermore, fish is related with Japanese culture. it's auspicious to burn whole bream, therefore it is served in wedding and shrimp is also a fortunate creature because it has curved back since Japanese believe to get a long life if they got curved back.
