現在の日本語は、３種類の文字から成り立っています。すなわち、表意文字としての漢字及び表音文字の平仮名と片仮名です。もともと日本語には文字がなかったのですが、５世紀ころに漢字を使って記録するようになりました。その漢字を日本人は日本語風に読むことを考えだし、さらに漢字を基に表音文字を作り出したのです。このような文字の基礎が確立したのは平安時代（794～1185）で、この文字のおかげで世界最古の長編小説『源氏物語』も紫式部によって完成されました。

Japanese consists of three letters currently, namely, Kanji which corresponds with ideogram ,and Hiragana and Katakana which correspond with phonogram. Japanese didn't have letters originally, but they got them around 5 century from China and can record. Japanese people came up with Japanese letters by reforming the original Kanji, moreover they made phonogram like Hiragana and Katakana. The substructure of those letters are built up in Heian Era(794 to 1185) and the oldest long novel called Genji Monogatari was written by Murasaki Shikibu by using those three letters.
