I read an article today for my Englich practice, and I don't understand the meaning of following sentence.

"I believe that the violence in the media helps vent this kind of aggression so society is actually more peaceful now than it would  be otherwise be." In this sentence, there are two point I can't understand.

First point is what is the word class and meaning of "so" before society.

Second point is what is the word class and meaning of "otherwise".

Please kindly help me.

Tomorrow, I have a meeting for implement new computer system, so I think I look the material for the meeting before sleeping.
