To this “promised” land the first groups of hunter-gatherers arrived from the Near East moving to the West. People who were forced to leave their homelands because they were too many. After journeying central and northern Europe probably for several thousand years, they settled on this territory, they became sedentary farmers and bred cattle, goat and pig herds. They were the “surplus” people coming into a strange landscape.
But the migration had to come to an end sooner than late: the ocean in the north and west, natural frontiers surrounding Europe. Then competition for the land started. So people erected such monuments to their ancestors, the megaliths, in order to say to their competitors: this is now my space
