The Mont Saint Michel stands in a bay with a remarkable landscape and ecosystem. The abbey of Mont Saint Michel is protected as a French monument historique and the whole site (Mont Saint Michel and its bay) is on the UNESCO list of world heritage sites. With more than 1.335 million visitors in 2010, the abbey is among the most visited cultural sites in France. The Mont-Saint-Michel and its by are of highly importance in regard to all environmental issues because we can find a huge biodiversity in its bay such as seals, birds and reed but also fishes and benthos. Rich ecosystem and economical activities linked to this (oysters, mussels, salted sheep grazing here, fish nursery)In 1878, a road dike has been created to calm tidal wave but this dike contribute to the bay silting. That is why, since 2014, the road dike has been detructed and a huge 1085 meters long dam has been constructed in order to acces the village at any time and enable the Mont to be an island again. This construction is the begining of an ecological restoration project in the Mont Saint Michel that aims to protect its beautiful landscape.
