This city is located on the northern cost of Spain, over the Cantabrico sea. The region it belongs is named Asturias. Its population is nearly three hundred thousand inhabitants. It is not the capital of the region but it is its largest city.
Firstly this was a small village located in a peninsula and most of the population made a living of fishing. In the twentieth century it became an industrial city, with textile, metal and steel industry, canning industry etc . After the recession most of the factories closed up and currently tourism is the most important activity.
The city stretches along the seaside, and there is a large sand beach and a sport port in the downtown. In the city most of the population lives in apartments but on the outskirts there are detached houses and small farms.
This is a simple city, there are no monumental buildings nor large avenues. There are a number or museums about the history of the city, local painters, aquarium, botanical garden and so on.
There is a big harbour which receives minerals, coal, and other goods, and in the last times some cruises.
In summer the populations grows a lot and the city lives its best period. The atmosphere in the streets is lively, shopping, bars and restaurants with room outside, concerts in squares, …. In the middle of August, the city holds its big party then there are a lot of activities such as concerts, fireworks, dance,…
The University is mainly specilized in tecnical degrees, such as engineering, computers,telecomunications,...
If I have to highlight three thinks I like the most in the city, these are:
1. The old village located in a small peninsula between the beach and the sport port.
2. The sea front where you can see people walking, swimming , skating, riding bikes, jogging, surfing, doing paddle,…
3. The outskirts of the city with a green landscape and full of paths and picnic areas.
In my opinion this is a lovely place to live, a nice location and a calm atmosphere. The only problem is that the globalization and the recession made this city loss the industrial activities and a lot of young people can’t do other thing but to emigrate, so the average age is growing and the city is losing vitality.
