Following are three groups of sentences. I tried to use a different but adequate structure to restate sentence A. Please correct errors for me. Thanks a lot.( ^_^ )
1) A: A favorite definition of joking has long been the ability to find similarity between dissimilar things, that is, hidden similarities.
B: Joking has long been defined as the act of finding hidden similarities--the similar part between two different things.
2) A: Nine out of ten doctors responding to a survey said that they recommend our product to their patients if they recommend anything.
B: According to a survey, 90% of the doctors were willing to recommend our product to their patients if necessary.
3) A:Heavy smokers and drinkers run a fifteen times greater risk of developing cancer of the mouth and throat than nonsmokers and nondrinkers.
B:Heavy smoking and drinking can raise the risk of developing cancer of the mouth and throat by 15 times.
I have some questions. Could you teach me another way to express “have long been...” in sentence one? And what does “if they recommend anything” in sentence two mean? Am I correct? Thank you very much.
