One day in one of my friend's posts on Facebook, I read; "If money didn't exist, would you still get up every morning and do what you do for living?" I remembered to be reading this phrase some days after I arrived to Guatemala. I have been accepted to conduct a research paper to identify the long term effects of housing and social programs offered by CC, a local NGO, to families living in extreme poverty. As a volunteer, a smile appeared in my face and then I said to myself; Yes, definitely I would do this for a living!  I earned a Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Management outside of the US years before I traveled to Guatemala. During those years that I was living in my native country, I participated in research projects related to urban policy, and risk management. Every time that I was absorbed by one of those research projects, I always came with the same conclusion. The findings obtained by those projects will be more compelling, simple, and more powerful to present through maps. For example, in my last project conducted in Guatemala, I was able to measure the well-being conditions of families after and before they obtained affordable housing and social support through an indicator system. However, after I finished this research, I also imagine the possibility of creating an information system where its staff members could constantly monitoring the families well-being conditions with regular visits and display the results of those social and economic indicators on a spacial/map form. This will be really helpful for the organization. They will be able to capture the exact location of more of 1500 beneficiary families, store their socio-economic conditions, and see the families’ progress on breaking the cycle of poverty with a spatial-temporal analysis. Having all those elements stored in a spacial database, the organization will be able to identify and analyze the connections of families and houses with their communities and territories looking for urban sustainability in Guatemala. This is a future research project that I have in mind, and I believe I will be able to make it real if I merged myself into spacial science.I want to pursue a Master’s of Science degree in Geographic Information Science at CUNY for many reasons. I love the energy and strong commitment that projects the Earth, Environmental Geospatial Science Department and staff members in engaging students in solving real-world problems with social conscious. I am really enthusiastic to see that the program has a combination of an applied research project while the student gains professional experience, PEAR option. Furthermore, I would be able to develop the research idea exposed before in this writing while I am focus on learning GIS. In addition, I want to pursue this master because it will bring me valuable skills that will amplify and improve my job qualification for data analysis and environmental social research. I want to make of this Master's Degree my dream ticket to start doing research for living.
