Talk about a project that you've worked on that was affected by scope creep. Based on what you've learned so far in the course, what are some things you could have done to keep the project in scope?

  • In the final project of my bachelor’s degree, I prepared and defined my project’s scope without the specifications of the deliverables. This was a big mistake because even though I satisfied all objectives of the project, the expectations of my professors were quite different. The project was a design of a three-phase inverter. My project was the first stage of an ambitious project. The big project was building a prototype for the power electronic laboratory at my university. Therefore, some stakeholders of the project, such as professors, classmates, judges, suggested that one of my goals was starting the construction as well. During the process, the design suffered several modifications due to the constant disagreement between stakeholders and teammates.  In the end, I spent more time trying to justify that I completed my work instead of talking about my project. Finally, we built the prototype and it is working in the laboratory. After this experience, I would like to highlight the importance of validating scope process and control scope because the process of formalizing the complete project deliverables and monitoring the status of the project is vital for finishing on time. Now, I know that in the process of managing changes to the scope baseline is important to modify the schedule.
