For this essay, I had to give my opinion if the government should be spending money on space exploration when there are quite enough problems on earth. Here's what resulted from this subject. Thank you, in advance. 

One of the most important events in our recent history is space exploration. Starting off as a competition between two countries to now where even private companies have come into play in a period of a couple of decades. However, is it worth it? Wouldn't humanity be better off with those resources being spent on earth's matters rather than space ones?
For a large part of the population, it is hard to look at space exploration and see it as worthier than to spend money on earth, especially when considered problems that took place in this recent past and ongoing currently. Difficulties that some of them have experienced firsthand or if not, problems that they have that sense of "It could have happened to me". At this moment, there are people dying under conditions where extra money could make a difference, whether from starvation, whether from lack of resources - medication, vaccines etc - or yet not cured diseases. With that in mind, shouldn't we first make earth a better place before shooting for the sky?  
On the other hand, by approaching in this manner we are directing efforts towards a field capable of opening up new technologies and knowledge we still don't know. We're spending money up there because it is important to the development and progress of science and also our society. Space exploration is about the future of humankind, is thinking about the long run than just right now. One day, it might be the difference between our existence or not. 
In short, I believe the money directed to space exploration is worth it. More importantly, our illiteracy on this subject is responsible for questions like this, as it aside from a few historical facts what we generally know is very little. In the end, this could be an opportunity to learn more about this topic, especially in the time that we live in, where information is just one click away.
