To begin with, we could consider the question: What does The Media mean? At the beginning of the twentieth century, The Media were newspaper and radio, and some decades later the TV popped up. Finally, the last one to join to “the media club” was Internet and social media. At the light of those facts, we could define The Media as all different information sources, from social media to most traditional paper-printed news available in coffee shops or supermarkets. That big amount of information begs the question: Are they really necessary all of them?
In the right side, It is supposed that as much media are available, as much different points of view will be available. In consequence, citizens would be full aware about the topics related with their live social and economic policies. Moreover, the media is a way to control the government actions. In this way, some politic scandals were found out by Media, like the famous Watergate. Otherwise, non-democracy governments have a strong vigilance on Media, in some cases like China Social Twitter of Facebook are not fully allowed to people.
There is not only good news when it comes to media. A recently research shows that people only check or watch the media according with their politic opinion. According to this, the probability that right wing followers would read a lefty tabloid is about as likely as the probability that left wing followers would read a traditional newspaper. According with that research, the big amount of choices that The Media represent, is only helpful to look for your own opinion, instead of being an opportunity to enrich yourself with different points of view. Another controversial point is the influence of TV tabloid in youth, especially in the vocabulary and good behavior when it comes to talk in public. Finally, there are always alternative voices which claim that The Media is the perfect tool to control the society. Are they real or they are just conspiracy theories?
Just to sum up, Media could be one of the big business around the world, there are wide spread companies which have different information products available, from News to TV channels. But we could conclude that there is no such a thing as consensus when it comes to the paper that The Media roll in our society.
