I slide my finger over the trigger as I wait patiently for the first of them to appear. The sun is setting on the reddish horizon. Soon it will be dark. The warm wind lifts up entire clouds of dark sand that fall slowly and heavily all around me, as a sort of unnatural rain. Abandoned cars lie all over the place. Their windshields and windows have been smashed into pieces. There is glass everywhere. As sunlight dies out, I hear the first howl. It comes from the insides of a big office building. The harrowing howl spreads everywhere, reverberating against the walls of the nearby skyscrapers. The second howl, a horrifying shriek, emerges from a small bar behind me. I realize that they have me surrounded. It does not matter. I am very well positioned on the roof of a tightly sealed little building. They will not reach me.
