As far as I could remember, practicing sports was very unusual activity in adult’s world and they only practiced under doctor prescription, for instance, as a way to control the cholesterol level in blood. But that was all. My parents didn´t used to practice any kind of physical activities and I clearly remember that sports and physical activities were only related with schools and high schools. In the best scenario, you would practice during university.
Nowadays the reality is completely different. During these last decades, researches have shown that practicing sports has a strong relation with health, and finally people ended up bringing their self to practice exercises. Besides, gyms popped up here and there, and nowadays there are a widespread net of them across the country. Their activities are not only related with weights and getting muscle but also with different practices, from cycling indoor to yoga. Finally, it is remarkable that Gyms (nowadays called “Activity centers” and other alternative names) turn out to be such a good place to meet people, especially in big cities where people live in the rustle and bustle and don´t have too much time to socialize.
The benefits of physical activities clearly overweight the backwards. But it is necessary a doctor supervision on a regular basis to avoid injuries. Add to them, we have reasons to keep an eye in mental disorders related with sport practicing. The well-known anorexia is not the only one, and bigorexia has been around gyms for a long. Bigorexia is related with the obsession to keep moving, keep practicing beyond your physical capacity.
Finally, I would like to talk a little bit about my relation with sports. As I said, it was really weird to practice in my childhood and I couldn´t picture myself in a gym. But thanksfully, in my twenties I discovered the pleasure to keep moving and nowadays getting out for jogging, swimming or hiking is essential in my life.
