In the previous cases, we learned that since the “unspeakable” hope is a secret, human’s consciousness will tend to deny the truth and choose not to admit the existence of the hope ; therefore, the secret hope will be repressed into human’s subconscious. But in the case of Fräulein Elisabeth von R, Freud indicates that actually the patient was conscious of her illness. This idea is different from what I used to think. Previously, I though what causes a patient to suffer the illness is the conflict between her hope repressed into subconscious and her ego controlled by consciousness ( for example, before she admit her admiration to her brother-in-law, the affection was stored in her subconscious and she didn’t notice it.) But after finding that the hope is just a secret in her consciousness, instead of the one that hide in her “foreign body”, I am confused about the line between subconscious and consciousness. Since consciousness control our behavior most of the time, I used to believe that it is the hidden hope in subconscious that develops a correspond symptom in human’s body, causing the uncontrollable behavior to abreact the energy. But if the patient’s symptom is a result of the conflict in her consciousness, why still the patient lost control?
