Is there such a thing as a modern democracy? Democracy is the rule of the people. In order for democracy to be possible, however, the people must have access to reliable information about the topics on which decisions need to be made. Nowadays, the media provides the citizens with information about all kinds of topics. The media is controlled by people who is not indifferent to the governmental decisions that need to be made. Hence, the media is biased and because of it the citizens get biased information. Public opinion is moulded by the media. It is amazing how malleable people’s minds can be. Therefore, in actuality, modern democracy is the rule of the media and not the rule of the people. Modern democracy is oligarchy.
