日本は各地方が山岳地帯にさえぎられているため、各共同体が簡単に往来することができず、それぞれ独自の方言が発達しました。例えばラテン系の言語の中でフランス語とスペイン語は非常によく似ていて、それぞれラテン語の方言ということも可能ですが、日本語の方言もそれに近い違いを持っている場合があります。かつては東北地方と九州地方では互いにことばを通じさせるのが非常に困難だった時代もありました。そのため近代になってから、主に東京のことばを基準に徐々に共通語が形成されました。しかし、方言はその地域の文化を担っているので、むしろ最近はそれを大切にする運動が起こっています。

In Japan, each dialect was made by each region because they could't cross each border in order to be separated by mountain. For instance, French is quite similar to Spanish among Latin language, so their situation is like dialect, that is to say, Japanese dialect is same situation. For a long time ago, the people in Tohoku region could't communicate the people in Kyushu region becase of their dialect, therefore a common language based on Tokyo dialect was formed. However, each dialect can tell the difference like culture, so lately many people raise some movement to save their dialect.
