University has been established for academic education purpose since the very beginning. People in the past don't usually attend university if they want to be taught with employable skills, they would just go in the society instead. And those who enroll for university usually have an intention for an academic career, for example, a scientist, a research personnel.
However, as the time changes, more and more specialized knowledge is required in the employment market. If you are interested in the position of electronic engineer, you must require the basic science skills which were only taught in colleges.Even more traditional vocations like a farmer could use some modern techniques, as there are so many successful college-graduate farmers that earned a great deal of money by improving agriculture technology, which was taught in universities.
Not teaching marketable skills in university would also give rise to strange situation. The corporations executives often find a college graduate have no better performance on their work than a high school graduate, which leads to the wage cuts of these university graduates, making them receive the same money as a high school graduate does, and an employee with master's degree gets a salary of bachelor, and so on.
In my opinion, college today should all separate into 2 sections, one is for academic training, and the other is for employment training. Individuals can decide which section they will enroll on. Therefore, both students interested in research career and those interested in employment career can have proper educations for them all.
