There has been great advancement in architectural technology. Houses built a century ago in Taiwan can barely stand 2 stories while apartments over 20 stories and skyscrapers can be seen everywhere at present-day society. This also raise a public issue of the demolition to old buildings, for modern buildings are far more space efficient than old ones. I believe that the tearing-down of old buildings is a necessary action for the development of modern society, for the space is limited while the population never stops growing. However, such measures must be taken with great care.
Replacing old houses with modern apartment can save a great deal of room, which is extremely precious in big cities where real estate costs a fortune. This can ease the space costs of citizens, most of whom have been stretched to limit on finance. Tearing down old architectures is also beneficial to the safety of citizens. This point can be confirmed with many decrepit apartments that are not able to stand an earthquake, as they have a vast amount of crack in the structure.
Nevertheless, demolition of old buildings has its downsides if the government does not carry out carefully. The citizens will always resist changes, especially the changes of deprivation. This can easily be illustrated by imagining people live in an old house which will be razed. It takes a great deal of effort for individuals to move all their furniture to a new building, not to mention how inconvenient it is to adjust themselves to new environments.
For the sake of the limited space and city advancement, demolition to old houses is definitely inevitable. On the other hand, with great care must the government deal with such problem, or the rights of the citizenry would be undermined.
