My participation in the elaboration of the Official Standard ruling pollutant limits in wastewater discharges from the synthetic resins industry, consisted of researching synthetic resin production technologies, raw materials used, and brands and facilities located in Mexico. With the support of the National Institute of Ecology (INE), I contacted several production facilities and negotiated their participation into a survey. Using a statistical approach, I selected some of them to participate into a pollutants transfer study and wastewater quality discharge analysis; implemented a one week monitoring program, and analyzed data to obtain statistically reliable information. Based on my results, the company proposed to INE the maximum allowable limits of contaminants in wastewater discharges from the synthetic resins sector, and elaborated the corresponding regulatory document.
