Society needs a strategic shift towards sustainability to address global sustainability challenge and to restore the global socio-ecological system. The Framework for Strategic Sustainable development (FSSD) is a method for sustainable progress, which is consolidated for a better understanding and structuring of the sustainability challenge (Broman and Robèrt 2015). FSSD addresses a system thinking approach for a total comprehension of both the natural and the social system, increasing understanding of sustainability. It is composed of a clear principled definition of sustainability that is generally applicable and thus far specific enough to guide action (Waldron et al. 2008). Moreover, it can be applied to any system and in any entity with its well-structured analysis to make a better decision towards a strategic solution (Broman and Robèrt 2015).
The FSSD is builds on Backasting from essential and solid principles for sustainable development and is created to assist practitioners in (1) choose and inform the tools needed for the transition, (2) find strategic and economic viability or ambitious investment routes to gain the solutions and aims, (3) examine current practices from a complete sustainability perspective, and (4) detect solutions to problems and creative thinking that may make the problem out of the system (Robert 2009).
