how do you speak when you can't communicate with others in a country where they don't speak in your mother's tongue?

I have three solutions for this problem.

1, speak with only an word

2, use gestures

3, do nothing(don't communicate with others)

Many Japanese people select 1, I guess. It's because we have few facial expressions, so we can't use gestures effectively.

But, instead, we are eager to memorize a lot of foreign words. It includes some difficult words which people in mother's tongue don't use on a daily basis. we might be good at studying foreign words, but poor at using them in communication.

How about you?
