Here is a list of some of the habits I found really helped me with my English (as a second language) skills.
With the internet, any and all of these forms of practice are easily accessible free of charge and can be tailored to your specific areas of interest. All you have to do is search for them and dedicate some time to it.
• Listening to music in English, while reading the lyrics and singing along;
• Watching tv, films, documentaries, YouTube videos, etc. without subtitles, or with subtitles in English;
• Reading news, magazines, articles, books, blogs, etc. in English;
• Listening to audiobooks in English, while reading the written book and enunciating (especially new words) along;
• Writing comments, Facebook or forum posts, tweets, articles, short stories, etc. in English;
• Chatting (in writing) in English with people whenever on the internet;
• Doing language exchanges with partners who are serious about it, who are more advanced (preferably natives), who adequately divide language times and are willing to make corrections;
• Doing one or more of the above every day.
Other ways that I found of surrounding and improving myself in English are:
• Installing English dictionaries on browsers, word processors, chat and keyboard apps, etc. and always using spellcheck;
• Setting as English the default language of installed softwares, apps, social media, email providers, search engines, etc.;
• Using English to make Google searches;
• Looking up new words’ meanings, synonyms and their pronunciations on an English-to-English dictionary and speaking them aloud a few times.
I hope some of these habits help you in your language journey!
Share them if you know someone who might benefit from it!
