I disagree with the idea that language learners should be exposed only to the forms they are taught. Languages can be a subject at school, but it is not just an academic program such as science and math. Although there are rules and logics such as grammar, there is no limitation and absolute answer when using a language, and that is why we keep inventing new words and creating language arts such as poems and lyrics.
When it comes to the meaning of languages, it reminds me of one of my favorite Japanese anime – Doraemon. Acquiring a new language is like you own an “Anywhere Door”, people can travel around the world in reality and on the internet without barriers. The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page, and there is no such a “textbook” that includes all of the information about this world; therefore, we can’t ask students to start their journey after they are 100% ready, which means we won’t ask those language learners to start using a language after they memorize all of the vocabularies in a dictionary.
But there is a very important rule that teachers should always remind their students, “start where you are, use what you have, do what you can”. You don’t need to be 100% ready, but you have to keep being self-driven and never stop learning.
