There is still a split in La RĂ©union between marine wildlife defenders (scientists and activists) who are against the slaughter of sharks, and those for whom it is the only solution. For us this last opinion is not justified, because as scientists attest, shark populations are essential to marine ecosystems, and it is not reasonable to put them in danger of extinction, especially through methods that have never really proven their effectiveness. Especially since the knowledge on the ecology of sharks in La RĂ©union is insufficient to allow to set up an effective and sustainable management plan (culling would only be effective if you could draw a line showing that all of these sharks were resident 100%). The methods used to cull sharks are in any case open to criticism. Indeed, whether using nets or drumlines, there is a lot of bycatch, and therefore have the effect of destroying ecosystems that are already sensitive. The different methods of non-lethal prevention are often expensive, but we believe it is a price to pay to protect both the beachgoers and the ecosystem. No method offers 100% effective protection anyway. Therefore, it makes sense to combine the use of barriers and beach monitoring where possible.
