CELL PHONES AT SCHOOLS, A THREAT OR A BENEFIT FOR LEARNING?
Nowadays, the developing of thecnology has a considerable impact on everyday life. A good example of how tecnology plays an important role in some current societies is the increasing usage of mobile phones. Although the idea of using celulars in the classroom is thought not to be such a great idea. In fact, the Board of Education is considering banning the use of cell phones in schools. As a result, some parents and students are completely disagree with this controversial measure.
In one hand, the trouble with using these mobile devices would supposed to be a distraction for students at the time they have to attend. Teachers think is pretty difficult to catch the attention of students with mobiles in their hands. Students would spend hours and hours surfing on the Internet with their smartphones.
In the other hand, using cell phones at schools could make students miss a world of endless posibilities for learning. Some experts think we have to take advantage of the technological advances for innovating in teaching activities. For instante, mobiles phones could give a boost to shared assignments and collaborative working in the classrom. This method for learning, known as “Mobile-learning”, has already been tested in some countries getting excellent results.
As I see it, despite pros and cons of using celulars at schools, teachers should lose their fears for using new and more updated technologies for teaching. Instead banning the use of cell phones in schools, the students should be teached how to properly use the phones.
