Grupo IUSA owns the Pastejé Industrial Complex, which in 1995 conglomerated 43 different production facilities including glass production, foundry (Fe, Cu, Al & alloys), valves & fitting manufacturing, tube and wire production, blue jeans confection, among others. Its 20,000 employees workforce was really relevant for Jocotitlán and surrounding towns. The wastewater effluent of the complex, containing metals and heavy organic loads, was discharged without any treatment into the El Mogote Lagoon (actually a small dam). During a year, I was in charge of studying 17 of the 43 processes, analyzing all its environmental aspects, the transferring of pollutants among media, and the potential opportunities of emission and discharge reduction from a multi-media approach. Together with Mr. Adán Pando Moreno (reference), I developed and conducted a full scale soil study for a Bakelite production facility, and a water and groundwater quality study for the El Mogote Lagoon. For the latter, I participated into the basic engineering for a WWTP to treat the incoming affluent, and a metal recovery plant for sediment treating (El Mogote sediment composition showed 70% of recoverable metals).
