In the place in which I was born there is always a lot of sun. I believe that my native land is quite similar to Africa. Just like in certain parts of Africa, our earth is dark red and there are dense jungles. When I was a child I used to live in front of the jungle. In the mornings the jungle used to be covered with mist and everything seemed still and quiet, although the jungle was actually bustling with life. There were lots of monkeys, big pigs called peccaries, and jaguars. Also, there were huge colonies of ants who could invade my home in a single morning. They ate everything they could find. Whenever they invaded our house, we threw food on the ground, from the entrance door to the exit door. The ants followed the path traced by the food and because of that they used to leave our house without invading our kitchen. In our jungles there are lots of colourful birds, some of them have huge beaks, like the toucan, and some others are slender and tall, like the flamingo. One of the things that I liked the most about growing up in my native land is that there are lots of legends and stories about the jungle. For example, people say that there are spirits living in the woods. Most of these spirits are evil and can kidnap people, especially children. One of the most popular spirits is called “Yasi Yatere”. I don’t really know what this name means, but I do know that “Yasi” means “moon” in the language of the local tribes. The feet of the Yasi Yatere point backwards. He is short, but sturdy, and he has a long beard. He also has a long staff that ends in a sharp point. He beats people with this staff and he can also use it to hypnotize his victims. Even some adult people believe in the Yasi Yatere. Not so long ago, there was a guy in my town who said that he was being chased by the Yasi Yatere. Once he was camping with some of his friends and suddenly, without any apparent reason, he threw himself to the ground and started writhing all over the place. It looked as if an invisible being was beating him. Later on the local priest carried out an exorcism on this guy. The problems ended after the exorcism, but the guy is still very much afraid of the Yasi Yatere.
