Doctor Who is the treasure of British television and it's the guiness book winner for longest running science fiction TV series and most successful sci-fi TV show. The reasons behind such great success can be the fact that every episode has it's own story line and can be watched be itself sided with the great personality of the many Doctors and his companions who went through the show.
Since the show's revival in 2005 the fanbase got stronger mixing old school fans and new ones who just got to start the show from the new begining. Christopher Eccleston did an amazing job bringing the Doctor to life with good jokes and a great spirit. Even if the 9th Doctor is not the most popular of the series he is the one to be thanked about the successful come back of the show.
David Tennant was the 10th Doctor, still the most popular one among the fans, and stayed for three seasons having Rose, Martha and Donna for companions along his time. Steven Moffat wrote and produced some episodes for the first four seasons of the show including the prized episode Blink one of the best episodes ever made into the series.
For his great work with the single episodes Moffat was called to be the lead writer and producer of the show, starting with the 11th Doctor, played by Matt Smith. On his first episode you can already notice the change on the Doctor's personality when he kicks some alien threat out by only saying he's The Doctor and is protecting Earth.
All the way through 11th and 12th Doctors we can follow how the show is centred in how smarth, amazing, badass and superior the Doctor is and how unpredictable such a formidable creature can be. The episodes are about the Doctor and his tragic past and struggles and not about whatever cool mission he is at the moment. We are presented with a lot of almost there crisis that pop around the show without any answers os developing. It's like we are all hooked waiting for some major thing that will never happen.
During Moffat's time as lead producer we are played at with amost there plot lines that hardly ever leads to a place of understanting or development of the story. He made she show so centered in the character of the Doctor that the main reason of this show being timeless - the Doctor changes along the regeneration - is being forgotten.
MOFFAT MADE A DOCTOR WITH SONIC SUNGLASSES INSTEAD OF A SONIC SCREWDRIVER. This should ilustrate my point clearly.
Overall I can say I'm really happy that Moffat is leaving the show. He didn't have the courage to really bring inovation into it and even if he is a talented writer (the single episodes where briliant) he doens't have what it takes to run the show without ruining it.
Let's hope Chris Chibnall can do a better job with the next season.
