Long before we became citizens, we were ready to fight for our would-be country, since we identified with the core principles on which the country was built. That left us wondering why certain individuals, such as John, were ever ready to desert their fellow compatriots in order to join the enemy.  We were pondering about it when the first truckload of supplies arrived from the capital. The soldiers started unloading the truck under the supervision of one of the sergeants. I left my post for an instant in order to fetch a package of cigarettes that I had left over my bed. When I was on my way to the barracks, I stumbled upon Sergeant Harry, who looked dejected despite having received an order to withdraw from the front line. I asked him what his problem was. He replied that he was sad to leave his fellow soldiers now that the real battles were about to begin. He looked sincere in what he had said, so I empathised with his grief. Thereupon, I moved on towards the barracks.
